Serving Guru!-The mythic tale

 Serving Guru!

Bhisma considered Dronācharya to be the best guru for young Kuru princes & welcomed him to Hastināpur. In reply to Bhisma’s inquiries, Drona said-as our fathers were good friends, and Drupada & I were playmates in our childhood. In fact, he promised me that when he will become king, he would hand over half his kingdom to me. After our fathers Prata & Bharadvāja passed away, I learned the science of weapons from Agnivesya. I desired to beget children & married Krpi, Krpācharya’s sister & Asvattāma was born

When Asvattāma was a small boy, he saw a rich man‘s son drinking milk from a cow & started to cry. I was pained to see the grief of my underprivileged son & began searching for anyone having many cows so that I can begone in charity. But despite all my efforts, no one agreed to give me one. One day thereafter, some of my son’s friends gave him water mixed with rice powder to drink. Thinking it to be milk, my son was very happy & his friends smiled at his innocence. I was very much sad at heart when I heard people deriding me for not earning enough & making my son a laughingstock

In grief, I decided to visit my old friend Drupada who was now king of Pāncala. I approached him with great confidence, but he refused to accept me as his friend due to my abject poverty. He even didn't remember his promise to share his kingdom with me & all he gave me was food & shelter for the night. I then left Pāncala & came here to become your grandson’s teacher

After hearing the story, Bhisma said-I gladly accepts you as Pāndavas & Kauravās ācharya. Be assured that you’ll be worshipped by all Kurus & provided with the best of comforts. Thus, Dronācharya began teaching Kuru princes & was provided with their own house & sufficient wealth

After some time, Drona assembled all princes & said-I’ve in my heart a particular purpose to teach you the science of weapons. When you’ll attain mastery over it, I’ll ask you to accomplish my objective. All princes listened to their guru intently & were silent. Arjun then boldly stepped forward & vowed-O Guru! I’ll accomplish your purpose, whatever it may be as that is the duty of a genuine disciple

Drona warmly embraced Arjun with tears in his eyes & affectionately smelled his head

A disciple pleases his spiritual master with his unconditional service attitude. This is the way to get his mercy & the guru imparts his best to the disciple. There should not be any consideration of personal benefit or loss while serving the master

Krsna says
tad viddhi pranipatena pariprasnena sevaya
upadeksyanti te jnanam jnaninas tattva-darsinah

Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from him submissively & render service unto him. The self-realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth

Mental speculation or dry arguments cannot help one progress in spiritual life. One has to approach a bona fide spiritual master to receive knowledge. It applies well to our material being too
