Maa Saraswati

 One may find many stories in the Indian literature about the goddess, Saraswati or Sarasvati by Google search. But this is all I believe as authentic in formation. She is worshiped as the Goddess of Speech and Indians have been worshiping her since the Vedic periods (~ 3000 BCE).

The name Saraswati first occurs in Mandala 2 of the Rigveda. The mantra  describes Saraswati as the best of mothers, of rivers, of goddesses.

    अम्बितमे नदीतमे देवितमे सरस्वति

    — Rigveda 2.41.16

(English equivalent: Best of mothers, the best of rivers, best of goddesses, Saraswatī).

She is also mentioned in the 10th Mandala of the Rigveda.

    अपो अस्मान मातरः शुन्धयन्तु घर्तेन नो घर्तप्वः पुनन्तु |

    विश्वं हि रिप्रं परवहन्ति देविरुदिदाभ्यः शुचिरापूत एमि ||

    — Rigveda 10.17

    May the waters, the mothers, cleanse us,

    may they who purify with butter, purify us with butter,

    for these goddesses bear away defilement,

    I come up out of them pure and cleansed.

    — translated by John Muir

She is mentioned as: "Made up of the essence of speech, the goddess Saraswati will enter into thy body". (Mahabharata, Shanti Parva, Section CCCXIX).

In Book 2 of Taittiriya Brahmana, she is called “the mother of eloquent speech and melodious music”.

The descriptions in the Puranas are confusing. For example, Brahmanda Purana (Chapter 43) describes her being created from Brahma (Puranic Encyclopedia, V. Mani, p-695). Without any authentic references (others may know) many other stories about her of being Brahma's consort etc., are also available in local literature and internet.
